CHAPTER SEVEN

Dillon gave his old friend, Tyler, a warm hug and took the large backpack from his hands, resting it up against the wall in the hallway.

“So you found the place okay?” Dillon said. “Sorry I couldn’t come get you from the airport. I can’t leave the apartment at the moment.”

Tyler cast his eyes around Dillon’s home. “Correct me if I’m wrong,” he said, “but this doesn’t look much like a lighthouse to me.”

“We had to leave the lighthouse this morning because of a serious attack. Beth will be staying here for the time being.”

Tyler crouched down as Ted came ambling into the hallway, and he greeted the dog with affection. “I’m guessing this is Ted.”

“Yeah. He’s a giant schnauzer and he looks big and scary, but he’s a softie really.”

Dillon led Tyler into the living room, where he had put a pot of coffee awaiting his friend’s arrival. His SEAL comrade seemed to have changed little in the ten years they had known each other. His light brown hair was still neatly cropped, and his skin was always tanned, no matter the time of year. The guys from their unit always teased him for being baby-faced, but his looks belied his true character. Tyler was tough all the way to his core.

“Where’s Beth?” Tyler asked, walking around the room, checking out the visibility from the window, familiarizing himself with his surroundings.

“She’s taking a bath,” Dillon replied. “She’s struggling to adjust to a new place, so she needed some time to herself to relax.” He kept his voice low, as though he didn’t want Beth to overhear. “She’s been living a very reclusive lifestyle over at the lighthouse and she’s gotten a little too used to her own company.”

“You mentioned something on the phone about her being left at the altar on her wedding day a few years ago,” Tyler said. “That’s gotta hurt.”

“Yeah, it did,” Dillon said. “She shut herself away and turned her back on the community, so it’s hard for her to return to the town, even though nobody knows she’s here.”

Tyler raised his eyebrows. “Nobody?”

“Nobody but you and me. Word will probably leak out eventually, but I decided not to give any information to the crew at the coast guard base.” Dillon poured a couple of coffees from the pot. “I have my suspicions that somebody is feeding information to the people traffickers, helping them gain access to Beth. I still don’t know why the cartel wants her dead, but I can’t take any chances with her safety. You’re the only person I can trust to guard her right now.”

“You got any suspects?” Tyler asked, sitting next to Dillon and taking a cup from his hands.

“Not yet, but there’s a chief petty officer by the name of Larry Chapman who’s a bit of a loose cannon. I had to break up a fight between him and his brother in a local restaurant yesterday, and although he’s apologized, it seems to have affected him. His mind isn’t totally on the job.
